Sometimes admired, sometimes criticized, but never ignored, Gauguin's paintings were greeted with incomprehension and the artist's lifestyle castigated as immoral.
Yet, today, he's seen as a major figure in modern art. His explorations of a primitive and exotic kind of art, freed from the rules of Western society, influenced many artists including Matisse, Picasso and Kandinsky.
The film makes creative use of animation to embody the artist's emotions and aesthetic obsessions and shed new light on a highly unusual body of work.
