From three emblematic moldings of the sculptor François Pompon (1855-1933), Baccarat sublime in clear crystal the Polar Bear, and in midnight crystal the Young Owl and the Little Brown Bear. These three pieces, co-signed Rmn and Baccarat, are made exclusively by Baccarat for the Rmn.
These pieces of light, with contrasting bursts, are born of the interest of the RMN for the matter, and the exceptional know-how of Baccarat.
The son of a carpenter from Saulieu, Burgundy, Pompon went to Paris at a very early age, where he was going to lead a double life: he cut the stone for Rodin, while creating personal works.
n 1888, observing the silhouette of a goose in the light, he undertakes to renew the animal sculpture. It refines the shapes, smooths the surfaces. This minimalist aesthetic is opposed to the romanticism of Barye and the tormented forms of Rodin.
Pompon always observes the living beast. In the Jardin des Plantes or in norman farms, he multiplies studies and sketches. He is also inspired by Egyptian and Japanese arts. The merchant Hébrard publishes and sells his creations.
It is at the age of 67 that Pompon is a resounding success, with his Life-size Polar Bear, exhibited at the Salon
