For several centuries, Japan lived under a feudal regime where primacy was given to the art of war, whose sword was the chivalrous weapon par excellence. Sword guard soon became a technically indispensable piece, but also a pretext for a refined decoration with his motifs and materials. The metal craftsmen made it a real art, infinitely varying decorative subjects, symbolic, literary...

These horn earrings are inspired by the Tsuba, the guards of Japanese swords. The animal figured here evokes a heron with outspread wings. At first functional and full, the tsuba quickly became purely decorative like this one. Many collections exist all around the world, including that of the Guimet Museum in Paris.
