Landscape can appear as an infrequent subject for Picasso when compared to others, such as portraiture or still life. However, he crosses his work and his life, according to his different workshops and the places of residence that the painter frequented, since his childhood, in Andalusia, until the end of his life in the South of France.
More than thirty Mediterranean landscapes painted by Picasso are reproduced in the catalogue, compared with landscapes of the South executed by his contemporaries, friends or acquaintances: Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, André Derain or Kisling. Finally, a selection of some fifteen photographs by Lucien Clergue, Robert Capa, André Villers and Henri Cartier-Bresson illustrate the familiar places, residences and workshops visited by Picasso.
