Aphrodite, known as Venus de Milo, around 100 BC, Island of Melos (Cyclades, Greece); Marble H. 2.04 m.
Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities
This sculpture, one of the masterpieces in the collections of Louvre, represents Aphrodite, Goddess of Love. Discovered in 1820 by a peasant on the island of Milo (Melos) in Greece, this Venus has something mysterious about it as archaeologists have never found its arms or its maker. There's a small story attached to it: King Louis XVIII decided to add arms to it, but finally gave up on the idea.
