Pompeii Ring

From earrings in gold half-spheres, found in Oplontis (Campania), 1st century AD, kept in Pompeii.

Roman goldsmithing from the early imperial period is well known: the eruption of Vesuvius (79 AD) froze a large number of jewels in the volcanic gangue.
The quarter or half-sphere earrings are an invention of the goldsmiths of Campania; the surface is usually smooth; only a few "granulated" models have survived, including the one discovered at Torre Annunzita and preserved in Pompeii.
