The Golden Gallery of the Banque de France

The Golden Gallery of the Banque de France

The Golden Gallery is an architectural masterpiece by François Mansart. Conceived in the 17th century in the Hôtel de La Vrillière, celebrated as the most complete in Paris, it served as a reference for the Apollo Gallery in the Louvre. Its 18th century woodwork is one of the jewels of the Regency style in Europe. Owned by the Banque de France since 1808, the gallery has been home to illustrious figures and exceptional events; it still participates today in French and international political history.

Richly illustrated and well-documented, this book traces the transformations of a place steeped in history through the journey of its successive owners. For the Golden Gallery was first the tool and symbol of the rise of the Secretary of State La Vrillière, before being owned by the Bourbon-Penthièvre (legitimate descendants of Louis XIV) and then bought by the Bank of France. We also discover that this magnificent gallery holds many mysteries since the paintings, the vault and the woodwork it houses illustrate in a hidden way three cycles dedicated to the history of France - the life of King Henry V, the union of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria and the wars of Louis XIV.
