Painter of Swiss origin, naturalized French in 1900, Félix Vallotton (1865-1925) addressed the main aesthetic trends of the two centuries. From his youth, he refused the conventional teaching of the Beaux-Arts, took up engraving, then joined the group of the Nabis and La Revue Blanche, painting portraits and urban scenes. But very quickly, he touched on all registers: nudes, still lifes, intimate scenes, allegories and great mythological machines. He treats these subjects with a strong sense of realism, in a smooth and cold aspect, a precise drawing cutting out the form and bold framing. A facetious interpreter of his surroundings, he breaks free from conventions and takes an ironic look at the world.
