Paul Durand-Ruel - Merchant of the Impressionists

Paul Durand-Ruel, a man of convictions, who became a dealer in paintings against his will, devoted his life to defending the painters he loved despite violent opposition from official circles and misunderstanding from the public. His efforts enabled him to impose the Barbizon painters, then the Impressionists, coming close to ruin on several occasions. "Without Durand," Claude Monet would later say, "we would have starved to death, all of us impressionists. We owe him everything. He was stubborn, relentless, he risked bankruptcy twenty times to support us. Criticism dragged us through the mud: but him, that's worse! We wrote: "These people are crazy, but there are crazier people than them, a merchant buys them!"
