Tintoretto - Birth of a genius
French language
On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Tintoretto (1519-1594), the Musée du Luxembourg is celebrating one of the most fascinating painters of the Venetian Renaissance and honouring his "works of youth".
The oldest of his works, The Adoration of the Magi, is preserved in his hand and was painted when he was less than twenty years old. Major commissions in the early 1550s helped to bring him to the forefront: The Original Sin for a brotherhood or The Princess, St. George and St. Louis for the seat of a Venetian administration near the Rialto.
It is a decisive period to understand how this ambitious young man, steeped in Venetian tradition but open to the many novelties coming from the rest of Italy, decided to renew painting in a cosmopolitan Venice.
Religious or secular painting, ceiling decoration or a small painting quickly executed, portrait of a prominent personality or a close friend, drawing or sketch... the works reflect the diversity of Tintoretto's work and his desire to strike the eye and the spirit with his audacity.
