Gromaire is formed in the academies of Montparnasse. His work is serious but not severe.
Marked by the war of 1914-1918, he comes out of it strengthened in his certainties; influenced by Cézanne, he advances against the tide of the experiments of cubism. He knew how to stay in touch with the world but he translated it into violently simplified forms. He says: I oppose deformation with the affirmation of the object. The ochres, the browns rise up from reds of blues which give them an accent whose power is imposing. It is also expressed in etchings, watercolours and in the art of tapestry.
