Pierre de Wissant, Burgher of Calais

This small-scale model of one of the six figures from the monument "The Burghers of Calais" was probably made in the years 1895-1899.

Although the statue of Pierre de Wissant serves to reinforce the plastic impact of the monumental group, this small-scale statue, standing on its own, is particularly expressive.

His elegant gesture expresses pain and despair while the drapery of the shirt in which his body is wrapped accentuates the sense of tragedy.

The sculpture in the Boulogne museum has the same features as the plaster model belonging to the Rodin Museum in Paris, in particular the broken rope around the neckline of the shirt.

Charles Lebeau, an industrialist and art patron acquired this sculpture in 1902, and he subsequently donated it to the Museum in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1916.
