Happy Mother and Child

After initial training with his father, a wood carver, Gilbert Privat enrolled in the Fine Arts School in Toulouse and then in its counterpart in Paris. He won second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1921. His career was studded with several official awards and he took part in various international exhibitions between 1925 and 1939.

He had a measure of success as is evidenced by his abundant production, receiving official commissions and work from renowned decorators who included his creations in their projects.

Privat developed his own style by combining his sound classical training with his own sensibility. His art is noble and movingly

He gives a harmonious, elegant interpretation of the female body. His willowy young women, usually nude or draped in the antique manner, have high breasts, long torsos and elongated limbs. The legs are usually together, adding to the impression of serenity and balance in both the composition and expression. His statues often deliberately combine worldly grace and artless sensuality.
