Roman ring

This large ring is made of a band which is completely covered with a twisted strand. The stone, domed and polished, is set in a metal mount decorated with twisted strands set with pearls. Where the stone is set into the ring, there are three small balls arranged in a triangle.

In creating this piece, the goldsmith was striving for formal aestheticism, characteristic of the Roman world at that period. He played on the contrasts in the appearance of the gold, alternating polished and matt surfaces, and on colour contrasts, between the grey of the agate and the yellow of the gold.
