Gabrielle d'Estrées Pearl Earrings
Earrings inspired by a detail on the work Gabrielle d'Estrées and her sister, the Duchess of Villars, Oil on canvas, around the first quarter of the 17th century and by an anonymous author, kept at the Château de Fontainebleau.
Ladies bathing or at the toilet became a privileged subject of the French artists in the 16th century.
The precious refinement of the poses testifies the influence of Flemish painting on French artists at the end of the 16th century and the importance of the aristocratic bathing culture, emblematic of Fontainebleau since the reign of François I.
This composition has often been copied, in particular a version kept in the Fine Arts Museum of Lyon or a dressed version, in the collections of the Archaeological Society of Montpellier. This work also recalls the double portrait of Gabrielle d'Estrées and her sister the duchess of Villars, preserved in the Louvre museum.
